UBTech Unveils UWorld U1, the World’s First Full-Size Companion Humanoid Robot

Chinese robotics company UBTech Robotics unveiled the UWorld U1 at WAIC 2026 in Shanghai on Thursday, presenting what it describes as the world’s first full-size ultrabionic humanoid robot designed specifically for emotional companionship. The robot features soft, warm silicone skin, 88 degrees of freedom, and an emotional AI system capable of recognizing more than 20 distinct human emotional states, enabling it to respond with contextually appropriate expressions and movements. Pre-orders for the U1 are now open, with first shipments expected by September 15, 2026, at approximately $145,700.

The UWorld U1 represents a deliberate departure from the industrial and logistics-focused humanoid robots that have dominated WAIC’s exhibition floor in recent years. Rather than optimizing for payload capacity, walking speed, or factory floor endurance, UBTech has engineered the U1 around the quality of human-robot interaction, prioritizing the tactile and visual cues that make a robot feel less like a machine and more like a presence. The robot’s silicone skin is designed to convey warmth to the touch, while cameras embedded in its eyes enable continuous face tracking, allowing the U1 to maintain eye contact and orient its attention toward the person it is interacting with.

The Case for Companion Robotics

The companion robotics segment has attracted growing interest in China as the country confronts the social and economic consequences of a rapidly aging population. With the number of Chinese citizens over 65 projected to exceed 400 million by 2050 and the country’s birth rate at historic lows, demand for non-human caregiving and companionship solutions is expected to grow substantially over the coming decades. LimX Dynamics closed a $200 million pre-IPO round earlier this month, and Xpeng has targeted 1,000 Iron robots per month by year-end, reflecting the industry’s rapid scaling. UBTech’s Commercial Trajectory and the Companion Market

UBTech’s decision to invest in the companion segment reflects a calculated bet on where the largest long-term consumer market for humanoid robots lies. Industrial and logistics humanoids are competing in a market defined by cost-per-task metrics and integration complexity, a market that favors companies with the deepest manufacturing scale and the most established enterprise relationships.
