Nubia unveiled the NaviX Ultra at WAIC 2026 in Shanghai on Thursday, positioning the device as an AI agent smartphone powered by ByteDance’s Doubao Phone Assistant, a system designed not merely to assist users with individual tasks but to autonomously orchestrate sequences of actions across applications on their behalf.

The launch received a SAIL Award at the conference, one of the event’s most prestigious technology recognitions, and adds to a growing cluster of AI agent-oriented smartphones that Chinese manufacturers are bringing to market as the industry moves beyond the first generation of AI feature integration.

According to CGTN, the NaviX Ultra is built around what Nubia describes as an AI agent architecture, a design philosophy that treats the phone’s AI system as a proactive orchestrator rather than a reactive assistant. Where conventional AI smartphone features respond to explicit user commands, an agent architecture allows the system to break down complex goals into subtasks, execute them across multiple applications, and adapt its approach based on intermediate results. The Doubao Phone Assistant, developed by ByteDance, provides the underlying model capability for this orchestration layer.

ByteDance’s Expanding Hardware Ambitions

The NaviX Ultra launch marks a significant step in ByteDance’s strategy to extend its AI capabilities into the hardware layer of the consumer technology stack.
