Honor Opens Pre-Orders for the World’s First Robot Phone, Featuring a Robotic AI Camera Arm

A Smartphone That Actually Moves

The smartphone has been in a rut. For most of the past decade, each new flagship generation has delivered incrementally better cameras, slightly faster chips, and marginally longer battery life, improvements that matter at the margins but rarely change how people actually use their phones. Honor’s Robot Phone, which opened pre-orders on July 18 at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, is a genuine departure from that pattern. It is the first production smartphone to integrate a robotic arm directly into the chassis, and it is betting that the combination of physical movement and on-device AI will define the next era of mobile computing.

The Robot Phone was first shown publicly at MWC 2026 in Barcelona as the lead product under Honor’s new “Alpha strategy,” a design philosophy that treats the smartphone as a platform for physical intelligence rather than a passive screen. The device’s most distinctive feature is a four-degree-of-freedom titanium alloy gimbal module integrated into the top of the handset. During normal use, the module sits flush with the chassis and is invisible. When the camera is activated, it extends in 0.8 seconds and becomes a fully articulated robotic arm capable of 360-degree tracking, intelligent subject following, and CIPA 5.5-level mechanical image stabilization.

The Camera and the Arm

The camera system built around this mechanism is ambitious. The primary sensor is a 200-megapixel 4D gimbal camera with an f/1.6 aperture, supported by a 50-megapixel ultra-wide and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto. Honor has partnered with Austrian cinema equipment maker ARRI to bring Log-C recording and professional LUT colour profiles to the device, a collaboration that signals the company’s intent to position the Robot Phone as a serious tool for video creators, not just a consumer gadget. The movable gimbal module also doubles as a physical expression system during AI interactions, nodding or tilting in response to on-device AI outputs in a way that no flat-screen phone can replicate.

Gizmochina reported that the Robot Phone is expected to ship with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, a 6.3-inch to 6.4-inch 1.5K display with four-sided narrow bezels, and 120W fast charging. The on-device AI model is Honor’s proprietary YOYO, which handles emotion recognition, proactive task execution, and the robotic arm’s physical expression behaviors. Pre-order customers in China receive a lifetime YOYO AI SVIP 2 membership, valued at 1,188 yuan per year, along with a one-year gimbal replacement guarantee covering up to three replacements, trade-in subsidies of up to 2,000 yuan, and a mystery gift box worth 3,500 yuan. Offline pre-orders require a 1,000 yuan deposit. Commercial launch is scheduled for August 2026.

Competing in China’s AI Smartphone Race

The Robot Phone arrives at a moment when China’s smartphone makers are racing to differentiate on AI rather than hardware specifications. ByteDance’s Doubao-powered Nubia NaviX Ultra, announced at the same WAIC event, takes a software-first approach to AI agency. Honor’s Robot Phone takes the opposite bet: that the next frontier in mobile AI requires physical actuation, not just smarter software running on a conventional screen.

The Risk of Moving Parts

That bet is not without risk. Robotic mechanisms add complexity, weight, and potential failure modes that conventional smartphones avoid entirely. The gimbal module, however elegant in its execution, is a moving part in a device category that has spent years eliminating moving parts. Honor’s one-year gimbal replacement guarantee, covering up to three replacements, suggests the company is aware of durability concerns and is pricing that risk into the pre-order package rather than pretending it does not exist.

The deeper question is whether the robotic form factor solves a problem that users actually have. The answer is probably yes for a specific segment: content creators, vloggers, and professionals who currently carry separate gimbals and cameras alongside their phones. For that audience, a device that integrates all three into a single pocket-sized package at a price likely in the 6,000 to 8,000 yuan range could be genuinely compelling. Whether that segment is large enough to justify the engineering investment is a question the August launch will begin to answer.

Honor’s trajectory since its separation from Huawei in 2020 has been one of steady recovery and increasing ambition. The company has rebuilt its global supply chain, re-established relationships with Qualcomm and other Western suppliers, and returned to competitive performance in China’s premium smartphone market.

The Robot Phone represents its most audacious product bet yet, a device that does not merely compete on specifications but attempts to define an entirely new product category. If it succeeds, it will be remembered as the moment the smartphone stopped being a flat rectangle and started moving.
