Hyundai Ioniq V Goes All In on Chinese AI: Momenta, ByteDance, Baidu, and CATL All Inside One Car

When Hyundai unveiled the Ioniq V at the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, the car’s technology stack read less like a Korean automaker’s product and more like a directory of China’s leading AI companies. Momenta handles the autonomous driving system. ByteDance provides the in-car AI assistant. Baidu Maps supplies the navigation layer. CATL supplies the battery. The Ioniq V is, in effect, a Hyundai chassis wrapped around a Chinese AI platform, a strategic bet that deep localization is the only viable path back to relevance in the world’s largest car market.

Hyundai’s China business has struggled in recent years as domestic brands led by BYD, Xpeng, and Li Auto have captured an increasing share of the market with vehicles that offer advanced intelligent driving features at competitive price points. The Ioniq V represents Hyundai’s most aggressive response to that challenge: rather than developing its own AI stack for the Chinese market, the company has chosen to integrate the best available Chinese technology directly into its product.

Momenta: The Autonomous Driving Brain

Momenta is one of China’s most technically sophisticated autonomous driving companies, backed by Toyota, SAIC, and a roster of Chinese technology investors. Its system, integrated into the Ioniq V, uses a combination of cameras, radar, and lidar to enable highway and urban autonomous driving. Momenta’s approach is notable for its emphasis on data efficiency, the company has developed techniques for learning from large volumes of unlabeled driving data, which allows it to improve its models faster than competitors that rely primarily on manually labeled datasets.

For Hyundai, partnering with Momenta solves a problem that has bedeviled foreign automakers in China: the autonomous driving systems developed for Western markets do not perform well on Chinese roads, which have different traffic patterns, road markings, and driving behaviors. By integrating Momenta’s system, which has been trained on Chinese road data, Hyundai gains a local advantage that it could not have built from scratch in a competitive timeframe.

ByteDance in the Cockpit

The integration of ByteDance’s AI assistant into the Ioniq V is a striking development that reflects how deeply ByteDance has expanded beyond its origins as a short-video platform. The Korea Herald reported that the Ioniq V will use ByteDance’s AI for in-car voice interaction, content recommendations, and entertainment features. ByteDance’s large language model capabilities, developed through its Doubao AI platform, give the Ioniq V a conversational interface that can handle complex queries, provide contextually relevant recommendations, and integrate with the broader ByteDance content ecosystem.

The choice of ByteDance as an in-car AI partner is also a signal about where the competition for in-car AI is heading. Baidu has historically been the dominant player in Chinese automotive AI through its Apollo platform, but ByteDance’s entry into the space — backed by its massive user data advantage and its experience building conversational AI for hundreds of millions of daily active users — represents a serious challenge to that dominance.

Baidu Maps and the Navigation Layer

The Ioniq V supports both Baidu Maps and Gaode Maps, the two dominant navigation platforms in China, as well as WeChat integration, reflecting a deliberate effort to match the local software experience that Chinese consumers expect. Baidu Maps remains the most widely used navigation application in China, with a level of local data richness that no foreign competitor can match, while Gaode Maps (owned by Alibaba) is the preferred choice for a large segment of urban users. For a foreign automaker trying to compete with domestic brands that have built their own navigation systems on top of Chinese data, offering both platforms is a pragmatic choice.

The Ioniq V’s deep integration of Chinese AI partners also reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry: the recognition that the software stack is now as important as the hardware, and that building a competitive software stack from scratch in a foreign market is prohibitively expensive and time-consuming. Volkswagen has made similar moves, partnering with Horizon Robotics for its in-car AI in China. General Motors has deepened its relationship with SAIC. The Ioniq V is the most comprehensive example yet of a foreign automaker essentially outsourcing its China AI strategy to Chinese technology companies.

CATL and the Battery Question

CATL’s inclusion in the Ioniq V’s technology stack is less surprising. CATL supplies batteries to a large proportion of the global EV industry but it is nonetheless significant in the context of the broader localization strategy. CATL’s latest battery technology, including its Kirin battery platform, offers energy density and charging speed that are competitive with any battery system in the world. For Hyundai, using CATL batteries in the Ioniq V ensures that the car’s range and charging performance will be competitive with domestic rivals.

The Ioniq V’s launch at Auto China 2026 comes at a moment when Hyundai is trying to recover from years of declining market share in China. The company’s difficulties stem from a 2017 diplomatic rift between Seoul and Beijing that sparked a consumer backlash against Korean brands, a setback compounded by China’s rapid shift to electric vehicles, led by domestic giants such as BYD and Geely. Against that backdrop, Hyundai’s deep localization strategy is a bet that Chinese consumers will respond to a foreign brand that has made a genuine commitment to Chinese technology, rather than simply adapting a global product for the local market.
