China’s AI-glasses market is approaching a basic consumer test: can a device look and feel enough like ordinary eyewear that people will keep wearing it after the first demonstration? RayNeo’s answer is the iO series, unveiled at its August 21 product event. 36Kr reported the next day that the first RayNeo iO product launched at an introductory price of 1,996 yuan, with a standard retail price of 2,499 yuan.
The company’s strategy is not to compete only on display effects. RayNeo is presenting a 34-gram pair of glasses as an all-day AI interface for schedules, translation, memory, and prompts. The bet is that convenience and acceptable physical design will matter as much as a model’s underlying capability.
RayNeo iO Packs AI Models Into a 34-Gram Consumer Frame
The iO uses RayNeo’s Blue Lake Optical Waveguide and a component it calls the Firefly Optical Engine Nano. 36Kr says the combination supports an equivalent 33-inch display, with 1,800 nits of eye-received brightness, while keeping the glasses at 34 grams. The company also says the product uses a magnesium-aluminum front frame and titanium-alloy temples to move the appearance closer to ordinary glasses.
Those specifications are company product claims, but they explain the design challenge. A wearable that is too heavy, too conspicuous, or too difficult to use will struggle to remain on a user’s face for a full day. RayNeo is trying to make the AI layer less visible physically while making its functions more readily available.
The product supports an information dashboard for weather, schedules, to-do items, world clocks, and stock subscriptions. It uses a Smart Crown dial and head gestures for interaction, according to 36Kr. The company also says it plans future integrations with Alipay, JD, AutoNavi, and Trip.com for tasks such as parking payment, express tracking, and flight information. Those integrations are plans, not current proof of consumer adoption.
China’s wider move toward on-device and ambient AI gives the product a favorable backdrop. EastFrontier’s report on Arm China’s AIOS alliance showed why phones, cars, glasses, and robots are all becoming targets for common AI software layers. RayNeo’s iO is one consumer attempt to make that transition visible in a device people wear rather than hold.
Translation, Memory, and Proactive Prompts Create the Real Product Test
RayNeo says the iO initially offers Qwen 3.7 Max and DeepSeek V4 Pro, with Kimi K3 and RayNeo’s own model planned for later access. The use of several models reflects a consumer-AI market in which the device may be judged by the usefulness of a task rather than loyalty to a single model provider.
The glasses include four array microphones and one bone-conduction microphone. 36Kr says they use Timekettle’s BabelOS 3.0 translation engine, covering 55 languages and 109 accents. The company also describes an AI teleprompter, meeting summaries, and a memory system intended to turn spoken and contextual information into searchable records.
These are precisely the features that will determine whether an AI wearable becomes an everyday tool. Real-time translation must work without causing awkward interruptions. Meeting summaries need to be accurate enough to be trusted. A prompt displayed during a conversation must help rather than distract. The more a device presents itself as proactive, the more users will judge it by judgment and timing, not merely by the number of functions listed on a launch slide.
That consumer test connects to the experience of agentic smartphones. EastFrontier reported that Chinese phone makers displayed agentic interfaces at WAIC, while app platforms created constraints for agents attempting to act across services. Glasses may offer a different interface, but they will still depend on apps, payments, travel data, and user permissions.
RayNeo Makes Camera-Free Privacy Part of Its Pitch
RayNeo’s privacy design is a notable part of the release. The iO has no camera, according to 36Kr. The company says recording and translation functions are tied to a visible hardware indicator light that cannot be disabled through software. It also says original conversations used by its all-day smart memory are anonymized and desensitized on the device before any necessary structured information is uploaded.
These are company statements about how the product is designed, not an independent privacy audit. Still, their prominence shows why AI-glasses makers understand that acceptance will depend on social as well as technical questions. People in meetings, classrooms, shops, or on public transport will judge a device worn in those settings. Visible signals and limits on collection can shape whether people see the device as helpful or intrusive.
The launch price gives RayNeo a concrete chance to test that proposition in China’s consumer market. At 1,996 yuan during launch and 2,499 yuan at standard retail, the iO is not priced as a casual accessory for every buyer. It is priced as a consumer electronics device that must justify itself through regular use.
RayNeo’s challenge is therefore larger than selling a new display. It must show that a lightweight frame, multilingual assistance, model access, and a camera-free privacy design can make AI feel more useful when it is present continuously. The answer will come from whether users choose to wear the glasses after the novelty fades, and whether the services RayNeo plans to connect can work smoothly enough to earn a place in daily life.
