China has successfully secured regulatory approval to deploy its domestically developed surgical robots in Vietnamese hospitals, marking a significant breakthrough in Beijing’s strategy to export advanced medical technology and challenge the global dominance of Western manufacturers. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, Chinese robotic systems have now been registered and installed at several leading medical facilities across the country, with clinical applications already underway.

This deployment represents a critical validation of China’s rapidly maturing medical AI and robotics sector, which has been heavily subsidized by the state to reduce reliance on expensive foreign equipment.

The entry into the Vietnamese market was facilitated by high-level institutional cooperation. China’s National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA) announced a comprehensive partnership with Vietnamese authorities covering robotic surgery training, clinical applications, academic exchanges, and talent development.

The surgical robots were introduced through the newly established China-ASEAN regional medical products trading platform, a joint initiative between the NHSA and Guangxi provincial authorities designed to streamline the export of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and consumables to Southeast Asian markets. This state-backed platform currently hosts over 381 Chinese companies offering 2,253 categories of medical equipment, providing a highly efficient conduit for Chinese tech firms to access the rapidly growing ASEAN healthcare sector.

Surging Export Data and Global Expansion

The successful deployment in Vietnam is part of a much broader surge in Chinese medical robotics exports. According to recent customs data, China’s exports of surgical robots skyrocketed by 344% year-over-year in the first half of 2026, reaching a total value of $70 million. While the absolute dollar figure remains relatively small compared to the broader medical device market, the trajectory of growth is staggering.

Approximately 10% of these exports were directed to the ASEAN region, where shipments surged by 246% compared to the same period last year. This rapid expansion indicates that Chinese manufacturers are successfully leveraging their cost advantages and improving technological capabilities to capture market share in developing economies.

The global footprint of Chinese surgical robots is also expanding rapidly. The number of international markets importing these systems from China more than doubled, growing from 23 countries to 49 over the past year. Notably, this expansion is not limited to emerging markets; Chinese systems are now being exported to advanced economies including the Netherlands, the United States, and various European nations, alongside major developing markets like India, Argentina, Turkey, and Thailand.

Leading Chinese manufacturers driving this export wave include MicroPort MedBot, Ronovo Surgical, and Edge Medical, all of which have integrated advanced artificial intelligence and machine vision capabilities into their robotic platforms to assist surgeons in complex, minimally invasive procedures.

Challenging the da Vinci Monopoly

The aggressive international expansion of Chinese surgical robots represents a direct challenge to the near-monopoly long held by U.S.-based Intuitive Surgical, the manufacturer of the ubiquitous da Vinci surgical system. According to data from GlobalData, Intuitive Surgical currently controls approximately 60% of the global market for robotic surgery.

However, the high capital cost of the da Vinci system, often exceeding $2 million per unit, alongside expensive proprietary maintenance contracts and single-use consumables, has historically priced many hospitals in developing nations out of the market. Chinese manufacturers are explicitly targeting this vulnerability, offering highly capable robotic systems at a fraction of the cost of their American counterparts.

By significantly lowering the barrier to entry for robotic surgery, Chinese firms are unlocking massive latent demand in regions like Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The integration of AI into these Chinese systems is also a key selling point. Advanced machine learning algorithms are being used to enhance 3D visualization, stabilize surgical instruments, and provide real-time anatomical analysis during procedures, narrowing the technological gap with established Western systems. As these Chinese robots accumulate more clinical data and secure regulatory approvals in diverse jurisdictions, their competitive position against legacy manufacturers will only strengthen.

The Strategic Importance of Medical Exports

The success of surgical robots in Vietnam highlights a broader shift in China’s export strategy. As traditional manufacturing sectors face headwinds from global economic slowdowns and rising domestic labor costs, Beijing has aggressively pivoted toward high-value, technology-intensive exports.

Artificial intelligence, robotics, and innovative medical devices have been unofficially dubbed China’s “next new three” strategic export industries, replacing the previous focus on solar panels, lithium-ion batteries, and electric vehicles. The NHSA has already indicated that following the success of surgical robots, the China-ASEAN trading platform will next focus on exporting advanced radiotherapy and interventional treatment devices to Vietnam and the broader region.

This strategic pivot carries significant geopolitical implications. By embedding its advanced medical technology into the healthcare infrastructure of neighboring countries, China is deepening its economic and technological integration with the Global South. The provision of state-of-the-art surgical robots, accompanied by comprehensive training and maintenance partnerships, creates long-term dependencies that extend far beyond simple trade relationships.

As Chinese medical AI and robotics continue to mature, they will increasingly serve as powerful instruments of soft power, demonstrating China’s technological prowess while simultaneously capturing highly lucrative segments of the global healthcare market.
