ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), China’s leading manufacturer of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chips, has officially launched the book-building process for its highly anticipated initial public offering. The listing, set to take place on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market, is poised to be the largest IPO in Asia so far in 2026 and the biggest-ever A-share semiconductor offering in Chinese history.

The massive capital raise underscores the strategic importance of the domestic memory sector and the surging investor appetite for AI-adjacent hardware companies. It also highlights the growing maturity of China’s capital markets in supporting the massive funding requirements of the semiconductor industry, even amid broader economic headwinds.

A Record-Breaking Capital Raise

According to a regulatory filing cited by Reuters, CXMT expects to raise approximately 57.9 billion yuan ($8.55 billion) before any over-allotment option. If the over allotment is fully exercised, gross proceeds could reach 66.6 billion yuan. The IPO price has been set at 8.66 yuan per share, and the company is scheduled to officially list on July 27, 2026.

The final pricing represents a significant upward revision from the company’s initial expectations. The price setting has seen CXMT effectively double its original fundraising target of 29.5 billion yuan ($4.35 billion), reflecting intense institutional demand and a highly favorable market environment for memory chip manufacturers.

The scale of the CXMT IPO surpasses the previous record for a Chinese A-share semiconductor listing, held by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) in its 2020 STAR Market debut. The sheer size of the offering has raised some concerns about potential liquidity drains on the broader Chinese stock market, but analysts remain largely optimistic.

“Memory supply is still not enough,” noted Donnie Teng, a Greater China semiconductor analyst at Nomura, citing the unprecedented demand generated by the global AI boom. “As long as AI demand is structurally positive and hyperscalers continue to spend their capex, the whole market can eventually absorb the liquidity drain from this IPO.”

Riding the AI Memory Supercycle

CXMT’s mega IPO is perfectly timed to capitalize on the global AI memory supercycle. As the world’s fourth-largest DRAM manufacturer, with an estimated 7.7% market share in 2025, the company is a critical supplier of the memory components required for servers, cloud computing infrastructure, and AI workloads.

The explosive growth in demand for AI hardware has transformed the financial trajectory of memory manufacturers worldwide. CXMT recently reported a staggering 1,688% net profit surge in the first quarter of 2026, validating its aggressive expansion strategy and providing a powerful narrative for prospective IPO investors.

The success of global peers further bolsters the investment case for CXMT. South Korea’s SK Hynix, a dominant player in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market, recently saw its US-listed shares jump 14% in their Nasdaq debut following a massive $26.5 billion share sale. This global appetite for memory stocks provides a strong tailwind for CXMT’s domestic listing.

Funding the Next Generation of Memory

The proceeds from the IPO will be directed toward upgrading CXMT’s production lines and accelerating the development of next-generation memory technologies. While the company has made rapid progress, it is still widely considered a technological laggard compared to industry leaders like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

Closing this technological gap is a national priority for China. As YMTC and CXMT scale rapidly to reshape global memory markets, the ability to produce advanced DRAM and eventually HBM domestically is critical to ensuring the security and resilience of China’s AI supply chain.

The capital raised through the STAR Market listing will allow CXMT to invest heavily in research and development, procure advanced manufacturing equipment (to the extent permitted by export controls), and expand its fabrication capacity. The company is reportedly targeting HBM mass production in Shanghai by the end of 2026, a milestone that would significantly enhance its competitive position in the AI hardware market.

A Milestone for the STAR Market

The CXMT IPO is also a significant victory for the Shanghai STAR Market, which was established to provide a domestic funding channel for high-growth technology companies. The ability to execute an $8.55 billion listing demonstrates the exchange’s depth and maturity, reinforcing its role as the primary venue for China’s strategic technology assets.

The listing is part of a broader wave of semiconductor and AI-related IPOs on the STAR Market. As CXMT and Unitree clear STAR Market listings in China’s biggest IPO wave since 2020, the exchange is becoming the focal point for investors seeking exposure to the domestic AI ecosystem.

As book-building commences, all eyes will be on the level of institutional subscription and the subsequent trading performance when CXMT debuts on July 27. A strong showing will not only validate CXMT’s strategic direction but also signal enduring confidence in the long-term prospects of China’s semiconductor industry.
