ByteDance Sets Four AI Priorities for 2026: World Models, Coding, Seedance, and Doubao Monetization

ByteDance has established its strategic roadmap for artificial intelligence in 2026, focusing its massive resources on four core priorities: developing world models, advancing AI coding capabilities, refining its Seedance video generation tool, and accelerating the monetization of its flagship Doubao chatbot. The strategy, detailed in a report by 36Kr and KR Asia, reveals a company racing to close the gap in foundational research while simultaneously leveraging its massive user base to drive commercial returns.

The priorities reflect the dual challenge facing ByteDance: it must invest heavily in the foundational research required to remain competitive with global leaders like OpenAI and Google, while also demonstrating that its AI products can generate sustainable revenue from its hundreds of millions of users.

Catching Up in World Models

ByteDance’s most urgent technical priority is the development of world models, AI systems capable of understanding, predicting, and simulating the physical world. These models are considered a critical stepping stone toward more general AI capabilities, and companies like OpenAI (with Sora) and Google (with Genie) have established early leads.

ByteDance entered this specific race relatively late, with Zhou Chang, a former Alibaba researcher, taking the lead in 2024. The effort is now divided into multiple tracks to maximize the chances of a breakthrough. Wu Yonghui, who leads the core Seed research team, has been tasked with releasing at least one world model by the end of 2026, explicitly benchmarking against Google’s Genie 3. Meanwhile, a new research group led by Fan Haoqi, a former Meta FAIR researcher, is pursuing a 3D simulation route tailored for entertainment and gaming applications. To streamline operations and avoid duplication, the Vision-Language-Action (VLA) groups previously led by Li Hang and Wang Wenqian have been merged under Zhou Chang’s leadership.

Internal tests conducted in early 2026 suggest that ByteDance’s world model capabilities are currently about 10% behind the global state of the art. To close this gap rapidly, the company is deploying its vast financial resources. According to a data supplier cited in the report, ByteDance’s 2026 data budget for world models is an eight-figure RMB sum, roughly three to four times that of its domestic competitors. This spending reflects the strategic importance ByteDance places on world models as a foundation for future products across its entire ecosystem.

AI Coding as a Revenue Driver

The second major priority is AI-assisted coding, an area where ByteDance’s investment is second only to its world model efforts. The company is reportedly studying the training data and methodologies used for Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex to improve its own offerings.

ByteDance released the Doubao-Seed-Code model in November 2025 and launched the Trae AI coding tool in early 2025, aiming to capture a share of the lucrative developer productivity market. The coding AI space is viewed as particularly attractive because it targets professional users who are willing to pay for premium subscriptions, providing a more predictable revenue stream than consumer chatbots.

Refining Seedance

The third priority is Seedance, ByteDance’s video generation model and one of its most strategically important AI products given the company’s dominance in short-video platforms like TikTok and Douyin. The company has dedicated a review team of over 2,000 people to refine Seedance 2.0.

However, the team is reportedly reaching a pretraining ceiling and requires significantly cleaner, higher-quality training data to achieve further breakthroughs in video quality and coherence. This challenge is common across the video generation field, where the sheer diversity and complexity of visual content makes data curation an ongoing bottleneck.

ByteDance is also exploring interactive video through Vivix AI, a startup founded by former SenseTime senior research director Liu Yu, which is currently valued at $1.3 billion. Vivix represents a bet that the future of video AI lies not just in generation but in real-time, interactive experiences.

Monetizing Doubao’s Massive User Base

The final priority is the commercialization of Doubao, ByteDance’s consumer-facing AI chatbot. Doubao has achieved massive scale, surpassing 200 million daily active users (DAUs) after the 2026 Lunar New Year. Its overseas counterpart, Dola, surpassed 10 million DAUs at the end of 2025 and is targeting 30 million DAUs in 2026.

Having established a dominant user base, ByteDance is now shifting its focus to revenue generation. On June 3, the company announced a professional version of Doubao, introducing subscription plans ranging from RMB 0 to 500 ($0 to $73.6) per month.

This monetization push represents a significant shift from ByteDance’s strategy in 2024, when it triggered a brutal token price war by slashing API costs to capture market share. With the user base now secured, the company must prove that consumers are willing to pay for premium AI features—a challenge that has proven difficult for many AI companies worldwide.

ByteDance’s 2026 roadmap highlights the dual challenge facing China’s tech giants: they must invest heavily in foundational research to remain competitive globally, while simultaneously demonstrating clear paths to profitability in a maturing domestic market.
