China AI in Healthcare: Wandong Medical Unveils Full-Process AI Agent for Radiology

The integration of artificial intelligence into China’s healthcare system is moving beyond fragmented diagnostic tools toward comprehensive, full-process automation. At the 2026 China International Medical Equipment Fair in Shanghai, Wandong Medical unveiled what it claims is the industry’s first full-process AI agent for digital radiography (DR). The product, dubbed DR AI-Agent, represents a significant milestone in the “AI Plus” initiative outlined in the 2026 Government Work Report, which called for the faster rollout of AI agents in key sectors.

Unlike previous AI applications that focused solely on analyzing images after they were captured, the DR AI-Agent integrates intelligence across the entire examination workflow. From the moment a patient enters the imaging room, the system utilizes 3D cameras and AI-based algorithms to ensure precise positioning, a critical factor in obtaining high-quality scans. Once the image is acquired, the agent can accurately detect over 20 common chest conditions, including tuberculosis, pneumothorax, and fractures.

Addressing the Primary Care Bottleneck

The development of the DR AI-Agent is specifically targeted at addressing a critical bottleneck in China’s healthcare infrastructure: the limited diagnostic capacity of primary-level medical institutions. Huang Jiaxiang, representing WanLiCloud Healthcare IT Co (a Wandong subsidiary), emphasized that the agent is designed to empower these grassroots facilities. By automating complex positioning and providing highly accurate preliminary diagnoses, the system enables less experienced technicians and doctors to perform at a level closer to that of their peers in top-tier urban hospitals.

This focus aligns perfectly with the National Health Commission’s November guidelines, which established primary care as the key priority for the AI Plus Healthcare rollout. The government’s ambitious target is to make AI-assisted diagnosis widely available in primary care settings by 2030, while simultaneously establishing AI as a routine component of medical imaging at secondary and tertiary hospitals. The DR AI-Agent serves as a tangible example of how this policy directive is being translated into commercial products.

The DR AI-Agent’s underlying intelligence is powered by a large model developed by Midea’s Corporate Research Center. This model was trained on a massive dataset of over 4 million DR chest images, providing it with the depth of experience necessary to achieve high diagnostic accuracy. Ye Hongnan, a product manager for DR at Wandong Medical, noted that the agent produces images that are “more in line with diagnostic needs,” reducing the need for rescans and improving overall workflow efficiency.

The Shift to Integrated Systems

The introduction of the DR AI-Agent also highlights a broader technological shift within the medical AI sector. Guo Hongyu of the Midea Medical Devices Academy described this evolution as a move away from “fragmented smart tools” toward “integrated systems.” Rather than deploying separate AI algorithms for positioning, image enhancement, and diagnosis, hospitals can now implement a single, cohesive agent that manages the entire process.

This integrated approach is essential for realizing the full potential of AI in healthcare. Wang Zhenchang of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Beijing Friendship Hospital has argued that the industry must focus on moving beyond single-disease AI products. By creating agents capable of handling the entire workflow for a specific modality, such as digital radiography, companies like Wandong Medical are paving the way for more comprehensive and impactful AI deployments across the healthcare spectrum.
