By integrating advanced robotics into an existing, widely used consumer platform, the companies have bypassed the traditional barrier to entry for domestic robots: the prohibitive upfront cost of ownership. Instead of asking consumers to purchase a multi-thousand-dollar machine, they are offering the robot’s labor as a highly affordable, on-demand service.
The pricing strategy is aggressively disruptive. A standard three-hour smart cleaning session is currently priced at just 74 yuan (approximately $10.70). This rate is roughly half the cost of hiring a traditional human cleaner in Shenzhen, a tier-one city where labor costs have been steadily rising. The combination of novelty and extreme affordability has proven immensely popular; according to the companies involved, all available booking slots for March were sold out within days of the service’s launch.
A Hybrid Approach to Domestic Labor
Rather than attempting to build a fully autonomous robot capable of handling every conceivable household task—a technical challenge that continues to stymie even the most advanced AI labs—X Square Robot and 58 Daojia have adopted a pragmatic, hybrid service model. The workflow divides responsibilities strictly based on the comparative advantages of humans and machines.
When a customer books a session, the robot arrives accompanied by a human colleague. The robot is tasked with handling standardized, repetitive, and physically demanding duties. According to user reports, the machine autonomously navigates the home to arrange scattered shoes, clear clutter from tables, pick up toys from the floor, and stack books. Once the initial tidying is complete, it switches modes to wipe surfaces and clean pet litter boxes. It even assists the human cleaner in physically demanding tasks like folding heavy duvets, and concludes the service by replacing the trash bag and carrying the garbage outside.
Meanwhile, the human cleaner focuses on tasks that require fine motor skills, complex judgment, or specialized equipment. This includes managing client communication, performing intricate disinfection procedures, and handling dust mite removal. This division of labor ensures a high quality of service while maximizing the efficiency of the human worker, who is freed from the most tedious aspects of the job.
The Data Acquisition Strategy
While the immediate goal of the service is to generate revenue and disrupt the domestic cleaning market, the underlying strategic objective is far more valuable: data acquisition. For embodied AI companies, real-world interaction data is the most precious resource available. Implications for the Labor Market
The successful deployment of this service in Shenzhen raises profound questions about the future of the domestic labor market in China. The domestic service sector currently employs millions of migrant workers nationwide.
