From Exuberance to Attrition: China’s Humanoid Robot Sector Faces a Reckoning
China’s nascent humanoid robot industry has rapidly transitioned from a phase of exuberant innovation into a brutal price war, as more than 150 domestic manufacturers battle for market share and survival. The sector, whose domestic market was valued at 16.7 billion yuan ($2.3 billion) in 2025 and is projected to reach 86.1 billion yuan by 2030, is now confronting the consequences of rapid capital inflows: overcapacity, supply chain fractures, and a race to the bottom on pricing.
According to a report by Digitimes, the sector is facing significant growing pains. While China accounted for roughly 87% to 90% of global humanoid robot sales in 2025, shipping an estimated 13,000 to 16,000 units, the rush to scale has exposed critical bottlenecks in the supply chain. Manufacturers are struggling with shortages and quality issues in high-precision actuators, tactile sensors, and dexterous hands, the components that determine whether a humanoid robot can actually perform useful work in real-world environments.
The Price War Begins
The intense competition is driving prices down dramatically. Leading manufacturer Unitree, which recently launched a lifecycle management platform for its deployed fleet, now offers models ranging from $90,000 down to just $16,000. This aggressive pricing is fueled by a combination of government subsidies, pressure from venture capitalists to show commercial traction, and a race to achieve the economies of scale needed to bring component costs down.
The price compression is not unique to Unitree. Across the industry, manufacturers are slashing prices to win contracts with logistics companies, automotive manufacturers, and the government-backed pilot programs that represent the primary near-term market for humanoid robots. The result is a market where margins are thin, cash burn is high, and the pressure to cut corners on quality is intense.
Supply Chain Fractures
The Digitimes report highlights a structural vulnerability in China’s humanoid robot supply chain: the most critical components, high-precision harmonic drives, force-torque sensors, and the custom AI chips needed for real-time motion planning, are either imported or produced by a small number of domestic suppliers that cannot keep pace with demand. This creates a paradox: the very success of China’s humanoid robot industry in attracting investment and orders is straining the supply chain that makes production possible.
Several manufacturers have responded by vertically integrating, acquiring or investing in component suppliers to secure their supply chains. But this strategy requires capital that many smaller players do not have, and it takes time to build the manufacturing expertise needed to produce precision components at scale. In the meantime, delivery delays and quality inconsistencies are undermining customer confidence.
Reliability Concerns
Beyond supply chain issues, the Digitimes report raises concerns about the reliability of humanoid robots in real-world deployments. Several early adopters, including logistics companies and automotive manufacturers that deployed robots in pilot programs, have reported higher-than-expected failure rates and maintenance costs. The robots perform well in controlled demonstrations but struggle with the variability and unpredictability of actual industrial environments.
This reliability gap is not surprising given the early stage of the technology, but it is creating a credibility problem for the industry. Customers who invested in pilot programs based on optimistic vendor projections are now recalibrating their expectations, and some are pausing further deployments until the technology matures. The JD.com humanoid robot auction scheduled for the 618 shopping festival next month will be a significant test of whether consumer and commercial enthusiasm for humanoid robots can withstand exposure to reliability data.
Consolidation Ahead
The combination of price pressure, supply chain constraints, and reliability concerns points toward significant consolidation in China’s humanoid robot industry over the next 12 to 24 months. With more than 150 manufacturers competing for a market that, while growing rapidly, is not yet large enough to sustain all of them, the weaker players will inevitably fail or be absorbed by better-capitalized competitors. The survivors will be those that can achieve the scale, supply chain control, and reliability track record needed to win large enterprise contracts, a bar that only a handful of current players are likely to clear.
The International Competition
China’s humanoid robot industry does not operate in isolation. Boston Dynamics, Figure AI, and Agility Robotics in the United States, and Honda and Toyota in Japan, are all developing competing platforms. The US players in particular have attracted significant investment and have demonstrated impressive capabilities in controlled environments. But China’s advantages in manufacturing scale, supply chain depth, and the sheer number of engineers working on the problem give it a structural edge that individual US or Japanese companies are unlikely to match.
The ASEAN-China AI Industry Innovation Center, which was inaugurated last week, identified transportation and manufacturing as two of its four focus areas. If China can resolve its current supply chain and reliability challenges, the combination of domestic manufacturing scale and regional market access through ASEAN could give Chinese humanoid robot makers a decisive advantage in the markets that matter most for near-term commercial deployment.
