The enthusiasm for AI among the Chinese public is palpable. Recent events in Beijing and Shenzhen saw crowds of people lining up to get help installing AI assistants on their devices, scenes that would have been unimaginable just two years ago. This eagerness to adopt new technologies is a defining characteristic of the Chinese market, propelling the rapid diffusion of AI across virtually every sector of the economy.
A Nation of AI Users
The statistics underscore the scale of this phenomenon. According to a report by the government-controlled China Internet Network Information Center, more than 600 million people in China were using generative AI as of December 2025. This represents a staggering 142% increase from the previous year, highlighting the explosive growth in user adoption.
Ordinary citizens are leveraging AI for a multitude of tasks, from booking travel and ordering food to generating tailored health advice. A 64-year-old retired IT engineer in Shanghai reported joining a blood glucose monitoring service that uses AI to provide personalized health recommendations based on his daily readings. A college student in Macao described using AI to build a fully functional company website in under ten minutes for less than 5 yuan (70 cents ). These anecdotes, multiplied across hundreds of millions of users, paint a picture of a society that has embraced AI with remarkable speed and enthusiasm.
This widespread usage is not limited to simple chatbots. The adoption of “agentic” AI—systems capable of taking autonomous actions—is surging. The popular AI agent framework OpenClaw has seen massive uptake, with users employing it to automate complex workflows, such as managing social media accounts, conducting research, or executing multi-step business processes.

Surpassing US Token Consumption
The massive scale of AI adoption in China is reflected in the data these models consume. Measured in “tokens,” units of data such as part of a word, the weekly share used by Chinese AI models has recently surpassed that of US models, according to OpenRouter, an AI gateway platform that tracks data consumption across different AI systems.
This milestone is significant. It indicates that while US companies may build the most powerful models, Chinese users and businesses are putting their domestic models to work at a higher volume. This intense usage generates vast amounts of feedback data, which is crucial for refining and improving AI systems. The Chinese market is, in effect, providing a massive, real-world training signal that is accelerating the improvement of domestic models.
Corporate Integration and Ecosystems
Chinese technology giants are aggressively capitalizing on this trend, integrating AI into their sprawling ecosystems. Tencent has embedded OpenClaw into WeChat, its ubiquitous super-app, making agentic AI accessible to over a billion users. Alibaba is embedding agentic AI into its enterprise workflows through DingTalk and its cloud computing platform. The government is also playing an active role in accelerating adoption. China’s State Council has rolled out a series of measures to accelerate AI adoption across service sectors, and the country’s 15th Five-Year Plan has elevated AI to the status of core national infrastructure.

US export controls on advanced semiconductors continue to pose a bottleneck for the development of the most cutting-edge models. And the Great Firewall, China’s extensive internet censorship system, limits access to some global AI tools and creates a degree of isolation from the broader international AI ecosystem.
However, the sheer momentum of consumer and corporate adoption suggests that China’s role as the world’s premier AI testing ground will only solidify. As Chinese companies continue to iterate on their models based on massive real-world usage, the gap between US and Chinese AI capabilities may continue to narrow, driven not just by algorithmic breakthroughs but by the power of scale.
