Forty Chinese Autonomous Driving Executives Have Crossed Into Embodied Robotics — Li Auto and Horizon Are the Source

A significant talent migration is reshaping China’s artificial intelligence landscape, as top-tier engineers and executives pivot from the mature autonomous driving sector into the nascent, explosive field of embodied robotics. According to recent industry data from Gasgoo, approximately 40 core executives and technical leaders from China’s autonomous driving industry have crossed over into embodied intelligence since 2023.

This exodus spans more than 20 different robotics startups, with a striking 70% of these companies having been established in just the past two years. This rapid formation of new ventures underscores the intense momentum and capital flowing into the development of humanoid and general-purpose robots.

The Li Auto and Horizon Robotics Connection

What is particularly notable about this talent migration is its concentration. Nearly half of the executives making the leap originate from just two companies: automaker Li Auto and AI chipmaker Horizon Robotics.

Li Auto has been a prolific incubator for robotics talent. Over the past two years, a cohort of core entrepreneurs, including Shen Yanan, Lang Xianpeng, Wang Kai, Xia Zhongpu, and Zhao Zhelun, have left the automaker to pursue ventures in embodied AI. This outflow is rooted in Li Auto’s aggressive early investment in core AI technologies. Founder Li Xiang has long positioned the company as an AI firm, famously stating that the ultimate form of the automobile is a robot, and that today’s smart cars are essentially “wheeled robots.”

This vision attracted top-tier algorithm talent. However, as Li Auto recently restructured to emphasize “embodied intelligence” internally—shifting its organizational center of gravity toward underlying AI architecture—the roles for some autonomous driving executives shifted, prompting departures. The value of this talent is so high that Li Auto has reportedly discussed internally the idea of recruiting back those who left for robotics startups.

Horizon Robotics, founded by AI pioneer Yu Kai, has similarly spun out a wave of founders and executives, including Zhang Yufeng, Yu Yinan, Sun Junkai, Pan Yangjiayi, and Fan Qingyuan. Horizon’s deep roots in AI processing and its original mission to be the “Intel of the robotics era” naturally cultivated the exact skill sets required for the current embodied AI boom.

These moves take place across other companies as well. For example, EastFrontier has reported how Ex-Xpeng autonomous driving chief Li Liyun joined EngineAI after the company raised $200M in its Series B funding round.

A Natural Evolution

The transition from autonomous vehicles to embodied robotics is a logical technical evolution. The core challenges of self-driving cars, spatial perception, real-time decision-making, sensor fusion, and complex control algorithms are directly applicable to robots navigating dynamic physical environments.

As the autonomous driving industry enters a phase of commercial consolidation and incremental refinement, the frontier of AI research has shifted to general-purpose robotics. For ambitious engineers and executives, the embodied intelligence sector offers the next great technical challenge and the potential for massive financial upside, driving a talent migration that is rapidly accelerating China’s capabilities in the robotics race.
