With McKinsey projecting that China could face a shortfall of 5 million AI workers by 2030, and current university pipelines supplying only a fraction of that demand, companies are deploying summer camps, specialized research programs, and guaranteed employment pipelines targeting teenagers as young as 13.
The urgency of this talent acquisition strategy is underscored by current market data. Between January and May of 2026, Chinese employers advertised 3.08 AI vacancies for every qualified candidate, according to the recruitment platform Zhaopin, while AI engineering positions grew by 28.4% year-over-year. This extreme supply-demand imbalance has created a hyper-competitive environment where waiting for graduation is no longer a viable strategy.

While the program requires an annual tuition fee of 5,800 yuan ($800), Geely refunds the cost upon the successful completion of each academic year. Economists and industry analysts point out that younger engineers who have grown up interacting with open-source models and coding agents possess a distinct advantage. His father, identified only as Yang, expressed the challenges of nurturing such talent without formal resources, noting that his son is largely self-taught. Despite the potential for lucrative future employment, Yang recently considered pausing his son’s participation in public competitions to allow him time to rest and focus on normal adolescent activities, stating, “After all, he’s still just a kid.”
As the global race for AI supremacy intensifies, the recruitment of high school students in China is likely to become a standard industry practice rather than an anomaly. This trend mirrors similar, albeit less aggressive, shifts in the United States, where companies like Google and Palantir are increasingly open to hiring candidates without traditional bachelor’s degrees.
However, the scale and systemic nature of China’s youth recruitment drive, backed by massive corporate resources and driven by a looming demographic shortfall in engineering talent, suggests a fundamental restructuring of the country’s technological workforce. The ultimate success of these programs will depend on their ability to balance the intense demands of frontier AI research with the developmental needs of the teenagers they are recruiting.
