At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai this month, one exhibit drew a steady crowd of educators, provincial officials and foreign delegates. It was not a humanoid robot or a trillion-parameter foundation model. It was a blackboard.
iFLYTEK’s AI Blackboard, a large interactive display embedded with the Hefei-based company’s speech, vision and reasoning models, was one of the more grounded showcases at an event otherwise dominated by frontier chatbots and open-weight releases. But its ambition is arguably bigger than any single model: to change how China’s roughly 280 million students learn, one lesson at a time.
From chalk to computation
The AI Blackboard is not simply a smart whiteboard. It integrates a built-in high-resolution display, a suite of interactive teaching tools, and real-time adaptive lesson delivery powered by iFLYTEK’s Spark large language model family. Teachers can call up worksheets that are automatically calibrated to the difficulty each class needs, watch students’ handwritten answers being graded live, and pivot the lesson plan mid-lecture based on where comprehension is breaking down.
The system also functions as a two-way sensor. It logs which questions stumped which students, which explanations landed, and where a teacher’s pacing pushed too fast. That data, iFLYTEK argues, gives schools the raw material to move from one-size-fits-all instruction to something closer to genuinely personalized learning at classroom scale, a goal Chinese education reformers have pursued for decades without the tools to deliver it.
Alongside the blackboard, iFLYTEK is pushing a broader “AI Learning Machine” product line for after-school use in the home, effectively extending the same adaptive engine from the classroom to the kitchen table.
A national mandate meets a national vendor
The commercial timing could hardly be better. Beijing has spent the past two years turning AI education from an aspirational slogan into a compulsory curriculum. As EastFrontier has previously reported, China’s national AI education action plan requires mandatory AI instruction from primary school through university. A follow-up AI Plus Education plan added AI competencies to teacher qualification examinations, forcing tens of millions of educators to retrain — and creating vast institutional demand for classroom AI tools.
iFLYTEK, one of China’s oldest AI companies and long the country’s dominant speech recognition player, has positioned itself as the default supplier. Its education business has been expanding steadily as procurement contracts flow in from provincial governments and municipal school districts. Unlike Alibaba, Tencent or Moonshot, iFLYTEK has spent more than two decades embedded in Chinese classrooms, giving it deep relationships with local education bureaus and a data moat on Chinese-language pedagogy that consumer-focused rivals cannot easily replicate.
The blackboard is the physical manifestation of that strategy. It bundles hardware, software and content into a single procurement line item, exactly the kind of packaged solution that risk-averse school administrators prefer.
The bigger picture: an AI-native generation
The rollout is happening against a backdrop of aggressive investment in early AI exposure. Tencent has opened summer camps that teach children coding, robotics and quantum computing, with week-long immersions priced at up to 13,000 yuan (about $1,800), according to reporting from El Mundo. Beijing has rewritten university degree programs, scrapping more than 12,000 degrees, many in the humanities and languages, to make room for AI, semiconductor and embodied intelligence majors. Even the country’s PhD programs are being restructured to align with industrial priorities.
“For our children’s generation, AI will be their natural environment,” a Shanghai mother told El Mundo, summarizing a sentiment that has become mainstream. That belief translates directly into household budgets — parents are willing to pay substantial sums for tutoring products that use AI to personalize practice, and municipal governments are willing to pay even more to install systems that promise measurable improvements in exam performance.
For iFLYTEK, this creates a rare position: a hardware-plus-software franchise with recurring content revenue, subsidized in part by state education budgets and pulled forward by anxious middle-class parents.
Personalization at scale — and the questions it raises
The pedagogical case for adaptive learning is well established. Squirrel AI, another Chinese education-AI firm that recently joined Time’s list of most influential AI companies, has reached 52 million students with its tutoring platform and is now expanding into the United States. Studies backed by these companies routinely claim significant gains in learning efficiency when AI-directed practice replaces uniform homework sets.
Yet the deployment of AI-powered blackboards, cameras and analytics systems across Chinese classrooms is also raising harder questions. EastFrontier has documented the proliferation of AI cameras that monitor student attention, and AI surveillance was deployed at this year’s gaokao national college entrance exam, which nearly 13 million students sat. Combined with the AI Blackboard’s fine-grained data collection, Chinese schools are becoming among the most instrumented educational environments in the world.
Regulators appear aware of the tension. Beijing has issued a stream of rules on children’s data protection, AI content labeling, and, most recently, restrictions on anthropomorphic AI companions aimed at protecting minors from emotional dependency. But there is no comprehensive framework yet for classroom-scale behavioral analytics, and privacy advocates have limited leverage inside a system where the education ministry is itself the primary buyer.
A model China wants to export
The AI Blackboard is also part of a broader export narrative. At WAIC 2026, President Xi Jinping pledged 5,000 AI training slots for developing nations, and China launched a Global AI Education Platform reaching 220 countries. iFLYTEK, alongside Squirrel AI, is one of the vendors positioned to convert that soft-power push into commercial contracts across Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa — regions where school systems face acute teacher shortages and where a bundled Chinese hardware-software offer is often cheaper than Western alternatives.
Whether the AI Blackboard genuinely delivers on the promise of personalized learning, or simply becomes the most sophisticated instrument yet for measuring exam performance, will become clearer over the next few school years. What is already clear is that, in Chinese classrooms, the chalk era is ending — and the company most likely to sell what comes next is already in the room.
