Huawei’s 2025 Annual Report Reveals AI as Core Driver Amid Slower Growth

Huawei Technologies’ 2025 annual report, released in late March 2026, paints a picture of a tech giant in transition. While the explosive top-line growth of the previous year has cooled significantly, the underlying financial data reveals a company aggressively reallocating its vast resources to secure a dominant position in the artificial intelligence and smart automotive sectors.

The headline figures show Huawei generated 880.9 billion yuan ($126 billion) in revenue for 2025. This represents a modest 2.2% increase year-over-year, a sharp deceleration from the impressive 22.4% growth recorded in 2024. However, despite the slower revenue expansion, the company’s profitability improved, with net profit rising from 62.6 billion yuan in 2024 to 68 billion yuan in 2025. This suggests that Huawei is successfully optimizing its operations and focusing on higher-margin business lines.

The undisputed star of the 2025 report is Huawei’s intelligent automotive solutions division. Revenue in this segment skyrocketed by 72.1% to reach 45 billion yuan. This explosive growth validates Huawei’s strategy of partnering with traditional automakers to provide the “brain” and nervous system for next-generation electric and autonomous vehicles. By supplying advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), smart cockpits, and underlying AI infrastructure, Huawei has positioned itself as an indispensable partner in the rapidly evolving Chinese EV market.

Conversely, the company’s cloud computing division experienced a slight contraction, with revenue falling 3.5% to 32.2 billion yuan. This dip in a traditionally high-growth sector may reflect intensifying competition from domestic rivals like Alibaba Cloud and Tencent Cloud, as well as a broader macroeconomic tightening that has led some enterprises to optimize their IT spending.

However, the most telling metric in the report is Huawei’s unwavering commitment to research and development. The company poured a staggering 192.3 billion yuan into R&D in 2025, accounting for 21.8% of its total revenue. Over the past decade, Huawei’s cumulative R&D investment has reached 1.4 trillion yuan. This massive financial commitment supports a workforce of 114,000 R&D employees and a portfolio of 165,000 active patents.

The focus of this R&D expenditure is unmistakably artificial intelligence. The term “AI” is mentioned 421 times across the 147-page annual report, signaling a profound strategic pivot. Huawei is not merely developing AI applications; it is building the foundational infrastructure required to power China’s AI ambitions. This includes the continued development of its Ascend AI processors, which serve as a critical domestic alternative to Nvidia’s restricted hardware, and the expansion of its HarmonyOS ecosystem, which now powers 36 million devices and supports 10 million developers.

The 2025 annual report confirms that Huawei has largely stabilized its core telecommunications business—having helped deploy 180 5G networks worldwide—and is now fully mobilized for the AI era. While the days of hyper-growth in consumer electronics may be behind it, Huawei’s deep pockets, massive engineering talent pool, and strategic focus on AI infrastructure and smart vehicles ensure it will remain a central, formidable force in China’s technological landscape for the foreseeable future.
