ByteDance’s Doubao AI Is Now Inside 7 Million Cars: Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen Are Among Its Partners

When ByteDance launched Doubao as a standalone AI assistant in 2023, it was competing for smartphone users. Three years later, the same model is running in the dashboards of more than 7 million cars. Data from Volcano Engine, ByteDance’s cloud and AI infrastructure subsidiary, shows Doubao is now embedded across 145 vehicle models from 50 manufacturers, a footprint that BGR, citing the Chinese tech outlet 36Kr, reported this week. The numbers capture how rapidly China’s AI and automotive industries have fused, and how decisively ByteDance has moved to claim the cockpit as its next platform.

Doubao’s reach extends beyond domestic brands. Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen have both deployed Doubao AI assistants in their vehicles sold in China, and at Auto China 2026 in April, Audi’s Chinese division announced that its latest electric SUV, the E7X, will feature ByteDance’s new AI system. Tan Dai, who leads Volcano Engine as its president, went further: every mainstream automaker in China has now signed up to integrate Volcano Engine’s AI solutions, he said. If the claim holds, ByteDance has effectively become the default AI infrastructure provider for the world’s largest car market.

Doubao Handles 30 Million Cockpit Interactions Per Day

The scale of deployment matches the intensity of usage. According to Tan Dai, Doubao’s Big Model processes over 30 million cockpit interactions daily across its installed base. These interactions range from basic voice commands, temperature control, music selection, navigation, to more complex agentic tasks. ByteDance has designed the system to act as a genuine AI agent rather than a simple voice assistant: drivers can instruct the Doubao cockpit to park in the spot closest to a building’s entrance, or ask it to reroute their journey to maximize exposure to scenic landmarks, with the system adjusting in real time.

Volcano Engine has built the system around what it calls a single “AI brain,” but one that is internally divided into three distinct engines handling conversation and reasoning, task completion, and continuous learning respectively. The architecture is designed to be modular: automakers can adopt the full Doubao stack or use the underlying framework as a foundation for their own proprietary AI systems.

Two New Vehicle Solutions Announced at Auto China 2026

At Auto China 2026 in April, ByteDance announced two new Doubao vehicle solutions scheduled for release this year. The first is the upgraded AI cockpit suite described above, which presents a more advanced agentic architecture than the current generation. The second is a new driver-facing Doubao cockpit assistant with expanded capabilities, including route planning, parking assistance, and real-time conversational interaction. ByteDance has positioned the new assistant as a potential challenger to Huawei’s HarmonyOS, a driving software platform that has been one of the dominant in-car operating systems in China’s premium EV segment.

The timing of the announcements reflects the competitive intensity of the in-car AI market. Doubao’s dominance is not unchallenged: Alibaba is pushing its Qwen AI model into Chinese vehicle cockpits, with BYD’s next slate of vehicles set to include Qwen as the primary AI system. Geely, Li Auto, Changan, Dongfeng, and Great Wall Motor are also incorporating Qwen. DeepSeek, meanwhile, is making its own push into the vehicle market. Even Tesla’s Chinese EVs have taken a multi-model approach, deploying both DeepSeek and Doubao voice command systems simultaneously.

The Smart Cockpit as China’s Next Platform War

The contest for the in-car AI market is not simply a product competition, but a platform war with long-term implications for data, commerce, and consumer loyalty. As we have previously reported, Chinese EV manufacturers are increasingly treating the vehicle interior as a digital living space, and the AI system that controls it as the gateway to a broader ecosystem of services.

Alibaba’s vision for Qwen in vehicles illustrates the stakes: its system is designed to allow drivers to initiate voice-activated transactions that go well beyond infotainment, such as hotel bookings, e-commerce deliveries, food orders, and event ticket purchases, all executed through the cockpit. In this model, the vehicle becomes a node in a commerce-and-content network, not merely a mode of transport.

ByteDance’s advantage in this competition is its existing dominance in content and recommendation algorithms. Doubao already has over 100 million daily users as a standalone AI model, having surpassed DeepSeek and Alibaba’s Qwen to become China’s most popular LLM. Embedding that system into 7 million vehicles, and growing, gives ByteDance a distribution channel and a data collection opportunity that its rivals are scrambling to match.

The global implications are also significant. As Chinese EV manufacturers expand internationally, bringing their AI-integrated vehicles to markets in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, the software stack inside those cars will travel with them. The question of which AI system powers the cockpit of a Chinese EV sold in Germany or Indonesia is increasingly about which Chinese tech platform gains a foothold in those markets.
