Moore Threads Technology, a prominent Chinese developer of graphics processing units (GPUs ), reported its first-ever quarterly profit for the first three months of 2026. While domestic chips may still lag behind the absolute cutting edge of Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture in raw performance, they are clearly crossing the threshold of “good enough” for a vast array of domestic AI workloads. As companies like Moore Threads, Cambricon, and MetaX generate sustainable revenue and profit, they can reinvest those funds into research and development, accelerating their product roadmaps and further closing the technological gap. The Q1 2026 results suggest that the US export controls, rather than crippling China’s AI ambitions, have effectively guaranteed a captive, highly lucrative market for its domestic chipmakers.
