The launch represents the most significant expansion yet of Huawei’s automotive AI ambitions, which have grown from a component-supplier role into a platform that now competes directly with the in-house intelligent driving systems developed by Xpeng, NIO, and BYD.
Qiankun ADS 5 is the fifth generation of Huawei’s Autonomous Driving Solution, and it incorporates the company’s latest Ascend AI chips alongside a new sensor fusion architecture that combines cameras, millimeter-wave radar, and lidar in a configuration that Huawei says enables reliable performance in adverse weather conditions, one of the persistent challenges for camera-dominant autonomous driving systems. The system is designed to support both highway and urban autonomous driving, with Huawei claiming that ADS 5 can handle the full range of driving scenarios encountered on Chinese roads without requiring driver intervention in most conditions.
Multiple Partners, Two Autonomy Levels
According to reports from Cailian Press distributed through Futunn News, the partner announcements at Auto China 2026 included Dongfeng’s Yipai brand, whose M8 large SUV was confirmed as equipped with the full Huawei Qiankun intelligent vehicle solution, alongside several other Chinese automakers showcasing ADS 5 integration at the show. The partnerships are structured in two tiers: some brands are targeting Level 3 deployments, in which the driver can hand off control to the system under defined conditions and is not required to monitor the road continuously; others are targeting Level 4 deployments, in which the system handles the full driving task without requiring any driver input.
The Level 3 deployments are expected to begin in the second half of 2026, pending regulatory approval. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued draft rules for Level 3 autonomous driving in 2023, and the final rules, which are expected to establish the conditions under which Level 3 vehicles can be sold and operated, have been anticipated for several years. The ADS 5 launch is partly a bet that those rules will be finalized in time to support commercial deployments before the end of the year.
The Level 4 partnerships are longer-dated, with most targeting 2027 deployments. Level 4 autonomy, the point at which a vehicle can complete a journey without any human input, is a significantly higher bar than Level 3, and the regulatory framework for commercial Level 4 passenger vehicles in China has not yet been established. Huawei’s announcement of Level 4 partnerships is therefore partly aspirational: it signals the company’s long-term direction and creates commercial relationships that will shape the development roadmap, but the actual deployments depend on regulatory developments that are not yet certain.
Huawei’s Platform Strategy

The show has featured 181 world premieres, with intelligent driving technology as the dominant theme. Xpeng announced its August Tesla-beating target. Geely unveiled its Eva Cab robotaxi. Volkswagen, BMW, and General Motors all announced deeper integrations with Chinese AI partners.
The cumulative picture from the show is of an industry that has moved decisively from competing on hardware such as battery range, charging speed, and interior design to competing on software and AI. The Regulatory Prerequisite
The commercial success of ADS 5’s Level 3 and Level 4 ambitions depends critically on regulatory developments that are not yet complete.
