ByteDance Reportedly Tests a Standalone Doubao Personal Agent

ByteDance is reportedly testing a separate personal-assistant application connected to Doubao, a move that would give its consumer AI service a dedicated product beyond the company’s existing chat experience. TechNode reported on September 30 that the app remains in internal testing and is planned as a standalone release. ByteDance has not officially announced the product, its final name, its features, or a launch date.

The distinction matters because the available details are unusually provisional. TechNode said the app has the tentative Chinese name Xiaodou (小豆), while the outlet also cautioned that both its public name and features could change before release. That limits the current story to an unannounced product under test, rather than a confirmed launch or an available agent service.

A Reported Standalone Doubao Personal Assistant

The reported application is tied to Doubao, which the official Doubao site presents as ByteDance’s AI assistant for chat, questions and answers, writing and copywriting, translation, and programming. That description establishes the functions of the existing consumer service. It does not verify a standalone Xiaodou app, its interface, or any eventual capabilities.

TechNode’s account places the prospective app beside that established Doubao service, rather than presenting it as a finished replacement. The outlet said the product was still being tested internally. It also said that earlier accounts had identified the project by the internal codename Spell and linked its development to the team behind the Doubao phone assistant. Those details remain reported claims based on the outlet’s sources, not a public ByteDance organizational statement.

Pandaily separately said Chinese media had described a personal-assistant project codenamed Spell that had been tested since April and was expected to become a new product. Its reporting likewise said ByteDance had not announced the product, final name, or release date. The corroboration supports the narrow point that work on a separate assistant has been reported by multiple outlets, but it does not settle what the public app will be called or when users could access it.

The spelling question also illustrates the uncertainty. TechNode used Xiaodou for 小豆, while other coverage has used Xiaodu as an English rendering. The Chinese characters are the more stable reference point at this stage. Treating either English spelling as a finalized brand would go beyond what ByteDance has made public.

Spell’s Reported Link to the Phone Assistant Team

According to TechNode’s longer account, sources said small-scale internal testing of Spell began as early as April 2026. The same account said the project was initially led by the Doubao Phone Assistant team and had not been disclosed publicly before the September reports. The timing, the team assignment, and the scale of testing should therefore be read as source-attributed reporting rather than independently confirmed company milestones.

The phone-assistant connection offers useful context, while stopping short of proving how the new app would work. Pandaily described the reported direction as an extension of phone-based assistant capabilities into an application that could run on any phone. That is a reported product direction, not evidence that compatibility has been launched, guaranteed, or technically demonstrated. Earlier EastFrontier coverage of Doubao’s limited phone-assistant beta provides context for the team and product line associated with the current reports.

Pandaily reported that the phone assistant appeared as a technical preview in December 2025 on a Nubia engineering device made with ZTE, followed by a consumer version in mid-September 2026 on the Nubia NaviX Ultra. TechNode’s longer report likewise described the December 2025 technical preview and a September 2026 consumer version. These reported device milestones concern the phone assistant, not confirmation that a separate Xiaodou app has reached consumers.

That separation is important for interpreting the current claims. A technical preview on a specified engineering device and a later consumer phone version provide a reported development backdrop. They do not establish a broad handset rollout, an app-store availability date, or a feature list for the personal-assistant product now said to be in internal testing.

Integration Claims Leave Key Product Questions Open

TechNode said its sources described Spell-developed capabilities being integrated with core capabilities from Doubao’s conversational-AI team. The outlet further reported that the two teams were expected to work jointly on further development and launch. Pandaily similarly described a reported plan for deeper integration with Doubao and joint responsibility by the Spell and Doubao chat teams for a new product. Neither description is an official announcement of a reorganization, product specification, or release schedule.

The reported collaboration comes after ByteDance’s own Doubao organization has received close attention. EastFrontier previously covered ByteDance’s reworking of Doubao chat teams after a user surge, while a separate August article examined its Doubao PC client as a desktop AI agent. Those earlier pieces are context for Doubao’s broader product footprint, not confirmation that their products share the reported Xiaodou app’s design or functions.

The unresolved product details are substantial. The reports do not establish that the standalone app can shop, arrange travel, make payments, control other apps, or carry out any other autonomous task. They also provide no verified information on user numbers, pricing, downloads, model versions, benchmarks, device lists, or revenue. Assigning any of those traits to Xiaodou would turn a tentative product report into unsupported product documentation.

For now, the defensible development is limited but meaningful: ByteDance is reportedly testing a standalone Doubao-linked personal assistant; reporting names 小豆 as the tentative Chinese name and Spell as an earlier internal codename; and the effort is said to draw on the phone-assistant team’s work alongside the Doubao chat team. An official ByteDance announcement would be needed to resolve the name, scope, availability, and final form of the product.
